MBD: Girl Edition 2018


The MBD: Girl Edition entrepreneurial conference is specially designed to encourage girls to become bold entrepreneurs—#girlpreneurs—and be mighty, brilliant, and determined.

At this free event, girls gain the skills, confidence, and connections to jumpstart their business or social venture idea. They connect with other girls who think big and gain inspiration from mentors to help make their entrepreneurial dreams a reality.

  • Submit your business to be in the Girls’ Marketplace

  • 24HR Generator—for 11th and 12th Grade Girls

    As a team, you will be presented with a problem a local business is experiencing. With the help of a mentor, collaborate on ideas to solve it. Spend 24 hours developing and testing solutions before making a final pitch with your team to a panel of judges for a cash prize. Get ready for a challenge! The Generator begins on Friday afternoon, March 16 with final presentations on Saturday, March 17.

  • Girls’ Marketplace—for Girls Ages 8-18

    Do you have a product or service to sell? Start preparing your products and planning how you’ll wow your customers with a booth in the Marketplace, which is open to the public. Judges will award a cash prize to the girl-owned business with the all-around strongest presentation. To be held at the event on March 17.

  • Event Entrepreneur Workshops—for Middle and High School-Age Girls and Adults

    Hear from local women entrepreneurs about their challenges and successes plus tips for thriving as a #girlpreneur. Event workshops will be held on March 17 and are open to girls, parents, and friends.

    Parents who have supported their girls’ entrepreneurial ventures share their insight on to best encourage girls and help them navigate their way through the trials and pitfalls to success.

    What a Girl Wants Is to Understand the Power of Social Media

    Your growing entrepreneur already knows how to use social media to stay in touch with her friends and family while staying in the know on what's happening in the world. What she needs to know is how to take those same platforms to the next level for her business. Hear from a panel of women in the industry, across client services and creative/production, on the importance and power of using social media as a business tool.

    Do you get nervous when you have to speak in front of others? You're definitely not alone!  But just like any other skill, with practice you can improve. At this seminar, led by Summer Kohlhorst, a Maker of Awesomeness at Center Centre—the User Experience Design School, you can learn techniques to cope with stage fright, help you think quick on your feet, and present your ideas through story-telling. Along the way you can Increase your self-confidence and start becoming the speaker and leader you are meant to be.

    Game On! Get Business Savvy! | 2:30-3:30 p.m. | Rotunda
    Whether you're trying to get into college, start a business, get a job, or make a good first impression in social settings, you know how important it is to look your best, speak with confidence, and use good manners. Join us for a fun, interactive session where you'll learn how to present your best self to future employers, clients, and adults who matter. Plus we’ll cover the do’s and don’ts of thank-you notes, business etiquette, and more. It's like being on a game show where the top prize is not $100,000 but the chance to show people you are priceless!

    CO.STARTERS Get Started Workshop | 1-4 p.m. | Caldwell Commons
    Whether you’re just getting started, stuck on a particular issue, or are in need of a refresher, this workshop will provide the jumpstart needed to get you moving. This workshop is a perfect opportunity to understand what’s driving you, explore your idea through the CO.STARTERS Canvas, and refine your model by learning ways to get meaningful customer feedback and start pursuing your idea today. You’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate with other members of the community and make valuable connections to help you along the way.
  • Pre-Event Workshops for Girls at the Public Library

    Ready to debut your business at the Girls’ Marketplace? Maybe you’re not sure how? Check out these free pre-event educational seminars, open to the public. All workshops are two-hours long and will be hosted at the downtown Chattanooga Public Library.

    Saturday, February 3, 2-4 p.m.—Branding Basics and Your Target Audience
    Take a look at three simple factors that can help you understand your brand: vibe, lifestyle, and story. Afterward, we'll do an exercise to help you understand who your target audience (or ideal customer) is! You'll leave with a worksheet to fill out to help you identify how your brand should come together based on your target audience. Register here!

    Review popular booth layouts that will help you stand out from the competition and attract shoppers. Next, get some tips on how to interact with your customers so you're professional (while still being yourself) and best represent your brand. Register here!

    During this workshop, we'll review a helpful list created by seasoned pros to prepare you for your big day that details everything you'll need to handle anything that may come your way. Register here!
